A senior official in the British Embassy has revealed that the phrase, long an emblem of Britain's quest for special status in Washington, has fallen out of favour. Diplomats instead refer to a "close bilateral relationship" that is only "one of the most important relationships for Britain." British and American officials have told The Sunday Telegraph that the change in approach by the prime minister has dramatically cooled the close comradeship of the Blair years and left room for French President Nicolas Sarkozy to fill the role of most prominent European ally.
